For the first time in 120 years of helping others, members of St. Barnabas have instituted a ministry that serves in the name of the whole parish based on a calling we all discerned together.
After a year-long process of comparing community needs and parishioner passions, a mindful consensus emerged that "Alleviating Hunger" and "Supporting Children's Growth and Development" would become the twin missions of The Sharing Table, our signature church-wide outreach.
One of the 2010 discernment groups
Currently, four programs – the "four legs of the Sharing Table" – each fulfill key priorities expressed during our discernment:
Once a week the church kitchen hums
The Soup Project prepares delicious soups with 100% of donations going to the Anglican St. George's Clinic in Bagdad. This answers desires for "hands-on" participation and the idea that "the world is our community."
St. B kids growing real food in real dirt
Josephine Community Garden is a Denver Urban Garden where St. B's has two plots each season. Volunteers raise produce to donate to local hunger projects, answering "alleviate hunger," "act locally," and "hands-on." Vegetables also go into meals the Soup Project prepares for CCN.
A homeless girl shows off her CCN art project
Colfax Community Network (CCN), serving homeless families in motels along Colfax Avenue, is a major outreach partner of The Sharing Table. Volunteers deliver a hot meal and tutor in CCN's After School Project, work with toddlers in CCN's weekly Parent-Tot program help in its office, and donate food and hygiene items. Large groups of St. B volunteers help with CCN's Easter and Christmas special programs and host community night 1-2x per year. "Alleviate hunger,"support children's growth and development" and "act locally" are among our goals realized through CCN.
Rep. DeGette gets a petition from STAG
The Advocacy Group (STAG) is Sharing Table's political action wing (it is definitely co-ed!). Volunteers study issues and pending legislation, share knowledge within the congregation, petition, lobby and spread awareness – often in partnership with like-purposed groups. "Hunger and children's issues" guide the choice of STAG initiatives.
